What is Supraglottoplasty?
Supraglottoplasty is the surgical treatment for laryngomalacia (or a floppy airway above the vocal cords). Most patients do not require surgery for laryngomalacia; however when it is severe, the surgery is indicated. This procedure is performed in the operating room under a general anesthetic utilizing a microscope. The airway is carefully evaluated and small tissue wedges are excised in order to open the supraglottic airway or airway above the vocal cords. Most children do extremely well following surgery and can be discharged home in 24-48 hours. Most children do require treatment with anti-reflux medications. Occasionally, a revision procedure is necessary. Our center has extensive experience in this procedure.
